FORK RACISM

We went from quarantine to chaos in a blink of an eye. Shelter-in-place for safety from one virus, only to take to the streets in protest for lack of safety from another – both with no cure.

And the correlation between our country returning to a ‘new normal’ while nothing changes is unavoidable.

Two weeks ago, when armed white men surrounded government buildings in protest – demanding quarantine restrictions be lifted because they were annoyed with staying at home and looking at and listening to each other’s vile asses; performing a fake-lynching of one government official, while threatening another because she’s a woman – no one was pepper sprayed, pelted with rubber bullets, or got a knee to the neck. What’s more, these people got full support from their president condoning their actions – not one being referred to as a thug.

For some, the take away from #BlackLivesMatter is that other lives don’t. And that belief is a HUGE part of the problem.

Do I agree with destroying property and looting businesses, especially when restaurants and shops are beginning to reopen after being closed for over two months and taking a financial hit? No, but I understand.

I understand the rage and anger that comes from being seen as less than human to evoke violence, however, I don’t agree that smashing the windows of a Target and stealing a 60” flat screen will get your point across. Then again, the people who do this kind of shit aren’t exactly proponents for any socio-political change. They’re part of the problem, too.

No progress has been made. Racial division continues – not because of any movement or hashtag – but because, thanks to social media, ignorance has a voice and it keeps getting louder – drowning out any hope for change. And I hate it.
